Smiles come in different forms. When treatments address this area, it is essential to consider what the impact on the smile will be as this is often a form of a persons identity. Some individuals are troubled by showing a lot of the upper gum when they smile which is often referred to as a gummy smile. Others are concerned about thinner lips. Whilst a common complaint as we age is a loss of hydration.

Subtle approaches are recommended particularly so that the overall smile is not impacted. The golden rule in cosmetic may apply to the lips where in general lips are thought most ideal when the top lip is smaller than the bottom lip in a particular ration. However this is not always the case, and the general face, ethnicity, gender and culture should be considered.

Over treatment in this area has what has been traditionally thought of looking overdone and don't look natural. Often this is the case when the lips and mouth are looked at in isolation. However they should be considered in proportion with the remainder of the face.
